THE LEGACY

Coach Dave Miller spent a lifetime building strong basketball teams, both at the high school and collegiate levels, and building long-lasting relationships with kids, their parents, fellow coaches and countless others.

After Coach Miller passed away on Dec. 10, 2025, at the age of 79, following a short battle with cancer, several of his loved ones decided to form a charity to raise money to support his passion of helping others.

Thus, we present the inaugural Coach Miller Memorial Golf Tournament at Glade Valley Golf Club on May 22.

An ability to connect with kids, along with diligent preparation and an unwavering attention to detail, allowed Miller to compile a career coaching record of 700-445 as a head coach at Poolesville (1968-81) and Walkersville (1981-93) high schools and Frederick Community College (1993-2013).

Under Miller’s direction, Walkersville was a perennial power as the Lions won state titles in 1984 and ’86 and advanced to the state tournament four other times. He enjoyed similar success at FCC, where he guided the Cougars to 11 consecutive Region XX Tournament appearances and was named JuCo Coach of the Year in 2002 and Region XX Coach of the Year in 2010.

After retiring as FCC’s head coach, Miller couldn’t stay away from the game he loved. He became a volunteer assistant coach at Shippensburg University where he spent the last 13 years helping head coach Chris Fite and the Raiders men’s basketball team.

All money raised will go directly to help support Walkersville High School’s athletic program, the Frederick Community College athletic program and the Shippensburg University men’s basketball program, which recently started a scholarship in Coach Miller’s name.
